In 2021, world stainless steel flat and long products production increased 11.3% (yoy) to 56 million tonnes. Strong increase seen in 2021 was mostly due to 4% (yoy) decrease seen in 2020 with the pandemic. Last year flat products composed 83% of the production with 11.4% (yoy) increase to 46.5 million tonnes whereas long products composed the remaining 17% and increased 10.5% (yoy) to 9.5 million tonnes.

In Q4/2021, global flat products production increased 3.3% (yoy) and 0.9% (qoq) to 11.6 million tonnes. In the same period, long products production increased 1.5% (yoy) but decreased 0.6% (qoq) to 2.33 million tonnes levels.

Europe’s stainless steel cold rolled coil production in 2021 increased 18.9% (yoy) to 3.7 million tonnes and Europe composed 10.8% of the global production. For the most recent quarter (Q4/2021), Europe’s STS CRC production increased 9.4% (yoy) and 0.7% (qoq) to 897 thousand tonnes.
