In addition to latest production and demand data 2021/22, stainless steel end use forecast data to 2028 are available in the club now. A real demand growth of 4.5% is expected.

• Stainless Steel Flat Products: Stainless steel real demand (cold and hot rolled coils and quarto plate) reached 41.4 million t in (+10% yoy) in 2021. For 2022, a slower growing market is expected due to supply chain issues, Ukraine war and increasing inflation worldwide (real demand of 43.3 million t). After a recovery in 2023, the global stainless steel flat market will reach a level of 54.4 million t in 2028.

• Stainless Steel Long Products: Stainless steel long product real demand (based on stainless steel hot rolled bars, forged bars and wire rod) reached 6.3 million t (+8% yoy). For 2022, SMR expects a market of around 6.6 million t (+4.8% yoy) for 2022. Between 2021 and 2028, the stainless steel long product market will grow by around 4% to 8.3 million t in 2028.

Please note that real demand includes stock level changes. In 2021, apparent consumption grew somewhat faster than real demand. For 2022, it is assumed that apparent consumption will grow by 2-3% only (real demand 4-5%).
